Access boundaries

controls that limit who can reach sensitive records and systems.

Access boundaries are the rules and technical controls that decide who can reach specific records, systems, or functions. They include authentication, role-based permissions, network segmentation, and approval workflows that keep sensitive data separated from general users.

In cyber security, strong access boundaries reduce the damage from stolen credentials, insider misuse, and lateral movement after an intrusion. If an attacker gains one account, narrow boundaries can prevent them from opening finance databases, student records, research archives, or backups. In real attacks, weak boundaries often show up as shared accounts, overprivileged users, or flat networks that let one compromise expose many systems. Defenders strengthen them with least-privilege access, periodic review of permissions, logging, and alerts for unusual bulk data access.
