Access claim

An allegation that files or systems were reached without confirmation.

An access claim is an allegation that a person or group reached files, accounts, or systems. The term describes what is being asserted, not what has been independently verified. A posted document sample or victim listing may be presented as evidence, but it does not by itself confirm that the material is authentic, how it was obtained, or how much information was accessed.

In cyber security, treating claims carefully helps avoid confusing an attacker’s statement with confirmed incident facts. Defenders can investigate by preserving logs, checking access records and file integrity, and assessing whether exposed data is genuine, while avoiding premature conclusions about scope or cause. Even an unverified claim warrants a measured response: monitor systems, protect potentially affected accounts and data, and communicate what is known separately from what remains uncertain.
