Account-based access control

a system that grants features only after identity and purchase checks succeed.

Account-based access control is a system that grants a user access to features or content only after verifying their account and checking that it has the required permissions, such as a valid purchase entitlement. It links identity checks to authorization: authentication confirms who is signing in, while access control determines what that account may use.

In digital services, this can determine whether a player can open pre-release content, download a game, or use a subscription feature. Defenders need to protect account credentials and ensure entitlement checks are accurate and reliable. Stolen credentials may let attackers misuse an account, while delayed or incorrect purchase data can wrongly deny legitimate access. Clear error handling, secure sign-in, and resilient services help protect both users and availability.
