Accounts-receivable records track money owed to an organization, including invoices, payments, outstanding balances, and insurer or payer information. In healthcare, these billing documents may also contain patient identifiers such as names and account numbers, and sometimes contact or treatment-related details.
For attackers, stolen records can support targeted phishing, payment fraud, or identity misuse; they can also be used to pressure an organization during extortion. Defenders should limit access to billing systems, encrypt sensitive files, monitor unusual downloads, and securely dispose of records when retention rules allow. If exposure is suspected, verify which records were accessed and assess the personal and financial information they contain.
