Ad platform abuse

The misuse of advertising systems to distribute deceptive or harmful content to unsuspecting users.

Ad platform abuse is the misuse of advertising systems to deliver deceptive or harmful content through search ads, display ads, or sponsored links. Attackers use the reach and trust of legitimate ad networks to place malicious landing pages in front of users who are actively searching for help, products, or updates. Because the ad looks like normal promotion, it can bypass the skepticism people apply to unfamiliar websites.

This matters in cyber security because the ad platform becomes part of the attack surface. Criminals can use it to drive victims to phishing pages, fake security alerts, tech-support scams, or malware downloads. In many cases, the goal is not immediate infection but social engineering: creating urgency so the target clicks, calls a fake support number, shares credentials, or grants remote access. Defenses include careful ad review by platforms, rapid abuse reporting, browser and DNS filtering, and user training to verify warnings and visit official sites directly instead of trusting urgent ads or pop-ups.
