Administrative account takeover

Unauthorized control of a privileged login that can change system settings.

Administrative account takeover is the unauthorized control of a privileged account, such as a system admin or service owner login. Once an attacker has that access, they can change settings, create new users, disable security controls, or approve actions that normal users cannot perform. Because the account already has trust, the attacker often needs fewer additional exploits to cause damage.

In cyber security, this matters because many breaches become much worse after privilege is gained. A web flaw, stolen password, phishing lure, or session hijack can all lead to admin takeover if authentication or account recovery is weak. In real defenses, teams reduce this risk with multifactor authentication, least-privilege design, login monitoring, and alerts for unusual changes to roles, passwords, or network access. If an admin account is exposed, responders should assume configuration tampering and review logs immediately.
