Administrator takeover is a security outcome where an attacker gains control of privileged management accounts or the settings they protect. It often happens after a flaw such as authentication bypass, SQL injection, command execution, or session theft lets the attacker act as a trusted operator.
This matters because administrative access can change users, reset passwords, alter routing, disable logging, and deploy further malware. In real attacks, takeover is often the end goal after earlier compromise of a web console, API, or backend service. Defenders reduce the risk with strong authentication, least privilege, network segmentation, input validation, patching, and monitoring for unusual changes to admin state.
