Advance-fee fraud is a scam that asks the victim to pay money up front before some larger payment, prize, refund, or account balance can be released. The payment may be called a tax, processing fee, commission, unlock charge, or verification cost. In reality, the promised payout does not exist, or it is intentionally withheld to extract more money.
This matters in cyber security because it often blends social engineering with fake websites, chat messages, and fraudulent support agents. Attackers use convincing dashboards or withdrawal errors to make the demand feel legitimate, then pressure the victim to send more funds, often through cryptocurrency. Defenders should treat any request for extra payment to “release” money as a major warning sign, verify the provider through trusted channels, and assume repeated fee requests are part of the attack.
