Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) is software that allocates machines, labor, materials, and time across production constraints. It helps manufacturers build feasible schedules, balance capacity, and react to shortages, downtime, or changing demand. APS often sits close to ERP, MES, and shop-floor data, so it can influence real operational decisions rather than just reporting on them.
That makes APS a valuable target in cyber attacks. If an attacker alters inputs, constraints, or permissions, the system may produce inefficient or unsafe schedules, delay maintenance, overload equipment, or create bottlenecks that look like ordinary business problems. Defenders protect APS by securing integrations, verifying telemetry, restricting who can change rules, and keeping detailed audit logs. Approval gates and rollback procedures are important because a bad schedule can disrupt production even when the software itself is not corrupted.
