Agrivoltaics

A setup that combines solar generation with agricultural land use.

Agrivoltaics is a land-use model that places solar panels on or above farmland so electricity generation and agriculture can happen on the same site. The goal is to produce renewable power without fully displacing productive land. Panel height, spacing, and layout are designed to preserve crop access, machinery movement, and some sunlight for plants.

In cyber security and critical infrastructure planning, agrivoltaics matters because power availability is part of resilience. Data centers and other sensitive facilities depend on predictable electricity, and distributed solar can reduce exposure to grid stress or fuel disruptions. The defensive upside comes with new attack surfaces: inverters, monitoring systems, and remote management links must be protected, and physical access to generation assets should be controlled. Used well, agrivoltaics supports cleaner, more flexible power; used poorly, it can add unmanaged operational risk.
