AI compliance is the governance process used to meet legal, policy, and internal requirements for using AI systems. It covers rules for data handling, model approval, human oversight, logging, retention, vendor review, and user access. In practice, compliance answers the question: can this AI be used in a way that is allowed, documented, and auditable?
In cyber security, AI compliance matters because a model can be “approved” on paper yet still create risk in production. Attackers may exploit weak governance through shadow AI use, unsafe integrations, prompt injection, or data poisoning, especially when controls are missing or poorly enforced. Good compliance supports defense by requiring inventories of AI systems, risk assessments, monitoring, and incident response procedures. It is not the same as security, but it helps make security measurable and repeatable.
