Allele

one version of a gene among possible variants.

An allele is one version of a gene among several possible variants. In biology, different alleles can produce different traits or change how a gene behaves. The key idea is variation: the same underlying code can exist in multiple forms, and only one form may be harmful or useful in a given situation.

In cyber security writing, allele is sometimes used as an analogy for code variants. That matters because attacks rarely stay identical: malware, phishing kits, and payloads are often modified into many small variants to evade detection. Defenders face a similar problem when they must target one malicious version without disrupting a safe one. Precision matters, whether the “variant” is a genetic sequence or a software sample. The term reminds analysts to look for differences, not just broad similarity, and to design controls that can distinguish one form from another.
