AMR stands for Advanced Modular Reactor. It is a broad label for newer nuclear reactor concepts that go beyond traditional large power plants and even beyond simpler small modular reactor designs. The term covers multiple reactor types, fuels, cooling systems, and deployment models, so there is no single AMR blueprint.
AMRs matter because they represent a possible next generation of nuclear power with more design flexibility, but also more technical and regulatory uncertainty. In practice, the label appears in engineering, licensing, and energy policy discussions when people compare reactor concepts, assess supply-chain needs, or evaluate safety and control requirements. For defenders and operators, the key issue is that each AMR design may require different instrumentation, software, physical protections, and security review before it can move from concept to operation.
