Anti-VM

Checks used to detect or avoid virtual machines and sandboxes.

Anti-VM refers to checks malware uses to detect virtual machines, sandboxes, or other analysis environments and then change behavior, delay execution, or stop entirely. These checks may look for virtual hardware, low resource counts, common VM drivers, debug artifacts, unusual timing, or known sandbox processes.

It matters because many defenders detonate suspicious files in isolated labs before allowing them onto real systems. If malware recognizes that it is being studied, it may hide its payload, skip key actions, or deliver only a harmless decoy. In real attacks, anti-VM logic often appears alongside other evasions such as anti-debugging, API tampering, or in-memory execution. For defenders, the best countermeasure is layered analysis: realistic sandboxes, memory inspection, process telemetry, and network monitoring that can still reveal behavior even when the sample tries to evade detection.
