The Apache-2.0 license is a permissive open-source software license. It lets people use, copy, modify, and redistribute code, including in commercial products, as long as they follow its terms. Those terms usually require keeping the copyright and license notices, stating changes, and including a copy of the license.
In cyber security, this matters because security tools, libraries, and detection components are often released under Apache-2.0. Teams can embed them in scanners, CI pipelines, or internal platforms without heavy copyleft obligations. That makes adoption easier, but it also means defenders must review the code carefully, track dependencies, and verify updates like any other third-party component. Attackers may also exploit trust in open-source packages, so license permissiveness does not equal safety. The license controls legal reuse; security still depends on code review, supply-chain checks, and maintenance.
