App store governance is the set of rules, workflows, and technical controls that decide how software is listed, ranked, reviewed, updated, and distributed through an app marketplace. It covers developer verification, content moderation, malware checks, search ranking, policy enforcement, and takedown decisions.
In cyber security, these controls matter because app stores are a major trust boundary. Strong governance can block trojanized apps, fake lookalikes, risky permissions, and abusive update channels before they reach users. Weak governance can let attackers abuse search placement, cloned branding, paid promotion, or misleading reviews to push malicious software. Defenders look for provenance checks, signature validation, permission review, and clear warning signals, because the way software is surfaced often shapes what users install and therefore what systems become exposed.
