Archive exposure is the risk that stored documents in shared drives, document-management systems, backups, or other repositories may be accessed by unauthorized people, copied, leaked, or used to pressure an organization. Archives can contain concentrated collections of personnel, customer, financial, or operational records, making them valuable targets.
In cyber extortion, attackers may steal archive contents and threaten to publish them, or claim to possess sensitive records to increase pressure. A claim alone does not prove that documents were accessed or copied. Defenders can reduce risk by limiting access, applying strong authentication, monitoring unusual searches or downloads, encrypting sensitive data, and maintaining tested backups. Knowing where archives are stored helps teams investigate suspicious activity and contain access quickly.
