Artifactory is a repository manager used to store, organize, and distribute software packages, build outputs, and related metadata in development pipelines. It often sits between developers, CI/CD systems, and release targets, so it becomes a central trust point for an organization’s software supply chain.
In cyber security, that makes Artifactory valuable to both defenders and attackers. Defenders use it to control access, verify artifact integrity, cache dependencies, and enforce signing or approval workflows. Attackers target it because a compromise can enable package tampering, theft of credentials, unauthorized upload or download of builds, and manipulation of downstream deployments. Vulnerabilities in a self-hosted instance can therefore affect far more than one server: they may expose source packages, internal metadata, and automation tokens that other systems trust. Secure configurations, patching, least privilege, strong authentication, and audit logging are essential when Artifactory is part of a production pipeline.
