Asset provenance is the record of where digital material came from and how it was handled over time. For images, code, audio, fonts, and other web assets, it can include the original source, author, license, transfer history, and any modifications. Clear provenance helps teams prove they have the right to use content and makes it easier to audit what actually shipped.
In cyber security, provenance matters because untracked assets can hide legal, operational, or security risk. Attackers may smuggle malicious code into copied libraries, stolen artwork, or reused scripts, while defenders use provenance checks to verify integrity, confirm licensing, and detect unauthorized changes. Good provenance is part of release management: it supports review, reduces supply-chain confusion, and gives responders a trustworthy trail when a public-facing site contains unexpected material.
