Asset recovery is the legal and administrative process of tracing, seizing, and managing property tied to criminal proceedings, sanctions, or other enforcement actions. The term covers both physical assets and digital records that prove ownership, control, or transfer authority. In cyber security, this matters because recovery workflows depend on email, case files, identity systems, approvals, and audit trails.
Attackers may target these systems to delay a seizure, steal sensitive documents, impersonate staff, or manipulate who can approve an action. Defenders should treat asset-recovery systems as high-value targets: use phishing-resistant multifactor authentication, restrict privileged access, log every change, and protect records with strong backup and integrity controls. When the process is compromised, the damage is not only technical; it can also weaken trust in the enforcement decision itself.
