Assurance model

A control framework that proves a system stayed within approved purpose, boundaries, and operating conditions.

An assurance model is a control framework used to prove that a system stayed within its approved purpose, boundaries, and operating conditions. It is not just a policy document; it is evidence that the system was configured, monitored, and constrained as intended. In cyber security, assurance matters because a control only helps if you can show it worked when the system was in use, not only when it was approved.

Assurance models are especially important for privileged automation and agentic AI, where a system may choose tools, access data, or trigger workflows. Defenders use the model to define allowed actions, stop conditions, required human approval, and change-review rules. Attackers and testers probe the same controls through boundary testing, looking for scope creep, unsafe writes, unauthorized access, or behavior changes after updates. A strong assurance model turns trust into verifiable evidence.
