Assurance risk

A failure mode where a system appears dependable but may still produce misleading or low-quality output.

Assurance risk is the possibility that a system seems reliable while producing misleading, incomplete, or low-quality results. It concerns the gap between how much people trust a system and how well its outputs are actually supported. In AI, fluent or confident language can create a false sense of accuracy.

This matters in cybersecurity and other high-impact workflows because teams may rely on AI for incident triage, risk reviews, or policy analysis. A model that agrees with a mistaken premise can reinforce confirmation bias without exploiting software or causing a direct breach. Defenses include testing with leading questions, incorrect assumptions, and conflicting evidence; tracking model versions and repeating evaluations after updates; and requiring human verification before consequential decisions.
