Authenticity check

A method used to confirm that a product, part, or component is legitimate.

An authenticity check is a verification step used to confirm that a product, part, or component is genuine and came through an approved source. In cyber security and supply-chain security, this can mean checking serial numbers, certificates, signed firmware, tamper-evident labels, or vendor validation codes before a device or consumable is accepted as legitimate.

Authenticity checks matter because counterfeit hardware can create reliability, support, and integrity problems. A fake cartridge, module, or replacement part may behave unpredictably, fail early, or break vendor support assumptions. In more advanced attacks, forged components or altered firmware can bypass trust controls and introduce malicious behavior into a fleet. Defenders use authenticity checks at procurement, receiving, and device startup to reduce that risk and to separate genuine items from lookalikes before they reach production systems.
