Automation exposure is the degree to which a job, workflow, or control process can be handled by software or other machine-assisted systems instead of people. In cybersecurity, it is a useful way to judge which business and security tasks are routine enough to be scripted, integrated, or replaced by automated checks.
It matters because high automation exposure can change both risk and defense. On the defensive side, teams automate log review, phishing triage, access reviews, and incident response to reduce response time and human error. On the offensive side, attackers look for exposed workflows they can scale with bots, such as credential stuffing, spam delivery, ticket abuse, or misuse of machine-to-machine approvals. The more a process depends on predictable steps, the easier it is to automate safely for defense or exploit at scale.
