An autonomous triage agent is software that investigates security alerts with reduced human input and produces a structured result for an analyst. It may gather context from logs and other connected tools, organize evidence, and summarize why an alert may warrant attention. “Autonomous” describes the degree of delegated work; it does not mean the system is necessarily fully independent.
In a security operations center, these agents can help teams handle alert volume, but their access and actions create risk. A mistaken conclusion can misdirect an investigation, and excessive permissions can let an agent change systems or trigger workflows without appropriate review. Defenders should apply least privilege, record the agent’s activity, test it on noisy or malicious inputs, and require human approval for consequential actions. Analysts should verify its findings against the underlying telemetry.
