AWS Secrets Manager is a managed service for storing and retrieving sensitive values such as API keys, database passwords, tokens, and private keys. Instead of hard-coding secrets into source code, environment files, or notebooks, applications request them at runtime through AWS APIs. Secrets can be encrypted, versioned, and rotated, which helps reduce the chance that credentials leak into code repos, logs, or shared systems.
In cyber security, Secrets Manager matters because attackers often look for the fastest path from one compromised host to the credentials that unlock more systems. If a workload has permission to read secrets, an attacker who gains code execution or shell access may try to pull them and pivot into cloud resources, SSH access, or internal services. Defenders limit this risk with tight IAM policies, separate secrets per application, rotation, auditing, and by treating secret retrieval as a privileged operation rather than a routine data lookup.
