A back-end service is an internal system that processes business logic behind a public interface such as a website, app, or API. Users usually do not see it directly, but it often handles critical tasks like authentication, account updates, order processing, logging, or payout calculations.
In cyber security, back-end services matter because they are high-value targets and common dependency points. Attackers may try to overload them with denial-of-service traffic, exploit weak APIs, or trigger failures that disrupt essential workflows. Defenders focus on isolating these services, rate limiting requests, monitoring health, and designing graceful degradation so a public front end can stay available even if internal components are under stress. When a back-end service supports payments or withdrawals, outages can quickly become financial incidents, not just technical ones.
