Back-office systems

Internal tools that handle administration, inventory, logistics, and other non-customer tasks.

Back-office systems are the internal tools that run a business behind the scenes. They handle administration, inventory, payments, logistics, staffing, reporting, and other non-customer-facing work. In retail, these systems may include stock databases, warehouse platforms, order management, and helpdesk tools.

They matter in cyber security because attackers often target them to cause broad disruption without immediately affecting the storefront. If back-office systems are encrypted, disabled, or tampered with, staff may lose visibility into stock, orders, deliveries, and customer support. That can create delays even when a website or shop remains open. Defenders reduce this risk by segmenting internal networks, limiting access, monitoring unusual activity, and keeping reliable backups and recovery plans. Protecting back-office systems helps contain incidents and keeps essential operations running during an attack.
