Backup freshness

how recent a backup is compared with the latest live data.

Backup freshness is how recent a backup is compared with the latest live data. A fresh backup captures more of the current state of systems, files, databases, and configurations, while a stale backup may leave a larger gap between what was last saved and what was lost.

This matters in cyber security because recovery is only useful if it restores data close to the point of failure. In ransomware, deletion, corruption, or outage scenarios, stale backups can increase data loss and force teams to rebuild missing transactions or settings. Attackers may also target backup systems to delay recovery or make available restore points older and less useful. Defenders reduce this risk by monitoring backup age, testing restore points, and aligning backup schedules with business change rates so recovery remains practical, not just possible.
