Backup management plane

The administrative layer that controls backup, replication, and recovery functions.

The backup management plane is the administrative layer that controls backup jobs, replication, retention, restore operations, and related policy settings. It is not just where backup data is stored; it is the control surface that decides what gets copied, where it goes, and how recovery is performed.

This plane matters because compromise can undermine resilience itself. If attackers gain access, they may disable backups, alter retention, tamper with replication, or use the interface to reach systems with elevated privileges. In real intrusions, exposed web consoles, weak authentication, or software flaws in backup platforms can turn the management plane into an entry point for web shells, command execution, or ransomware-style disruption. Defenders should restrict access to administrative interfaces, separate management roles, monitor for unexpected configuration changes, and verify that recovery paths still work after a compromise.
