Backup repository

a storage location for copied data used for recovery after loss or attack.

A backup repository is the storage location where copied data is kept so it can be restored after deletion, corruption, hardware failure, or a cyberattack. It may hold full system images, file backups, database snapshots, or incremental copies from multiple devices and servers.

In security work, backup repositories matter because they are often the last line of recovery after ransomware or destructive intrusion. If attackers reach the repository, they may encrypt, delete, or steal the backups themselves, which can turn a recoverable incident into a major outage. Defenders therefore protect repositories with strong access controls, separate credentials, encryption, immutability, and offline or offsite copies. In real attacks, criminals often hunt for backup systems early, because disabling recovery increases pressure on the victim and improves extortion leverage. Good backup design assumes the primary network may already be compromised and keeps recovery data isolated enough to survive that compromise.
