Banded pricing is a tariff model where the unit price changes depending on which usage band a customer falls into. Instead of one flat rate, the system applies different charges for different ranges of consumption, such as low-, medium-, and high-usage bands. In energy and other metered services, the billing engine must calculate usage accurately and assign it to the correct band.
In cyber security, this matters because band rules are part of the logic that turns raw meter data into money. If an attacker tampers with usage records, changes tariff configuration, or exploits a weak billing workflow, they may push charges into a cheaper band or create billing disputes. Defenders protect banded pricing systems with strong access control, signed or reconciled meter data, logging, and periodic audit of tariff tables. Clear band definitions also help detect fraud and reduce customer confusion when bills change at band thresholds.
