Battery Management System

The software and electronics that supervise battery health, safety, and performance.

A Battery Management System (BMS) is the software and electronics that monitor and control a battery pack. It measures charge level, voltage, current, and temperature, and it can balance cells, trigger alarms, and shut the battery down if conditions become unsafe. In large industrial batteries, a BMS is the layer that turns stored energy into a controlled, usable power source.

In cyber security, the BMS matters because it is a control point, not just a sensor. If attackers reach its network interface or vendor remote access, they may be able to change charging limits, suppress alerts, or disrupt availability. Defenders treat it like operational technology: segment it from business networks, restrict maintenance accounts, log changes, and verify firmware updates. In attacks and defenses alike, the BMS is often where power safety meets access control.
