Behavioral signal

a measurable action that can help a platform infer preference or interest.

A behavioral signal is a measurable action that suggests user intent or preference, such as scrolling, clicking, dwell time, login timing, or repeated returns to a page. Platforms, security tools, and fraud systems use these signals to infer what a person is likely interested in or whether an account is acting normally.

In cyber security, behavioral signals matter because they help defenders spot account takeover, bot activity, and suspicious automation. A sudden change in typing speed, navigation patterns, device use, or session timing can trigger step-up authentication or alerts. Attackers also study these signals and try to imitate normal behavior to avoid detection, which is why behavioral analysis is often combined with other controls such as device fingerprinting, risk scoring, and MFA.
