A BES Cyber System is a cyber system used in bulk electric system operations whose compromise could affect the reliable operation of the grid. In NERC CIP, the label helps decide what must be protected, monitored, and documented. It is not just a paperwork category: it marks the systems where an attacker could move from IT into operational technology and affect protection, control, or visibility.
In real environments, BES Cyber Systems may include relays, gateways, control servers, and related communications paths. Defenders care about them because they often sit at critical boundaries, where remote access, vendor support, and field maintenance create risk. Security controls such as segmentation, least privilege, strong authentication, asset inventory, and logging are used to reduce the chance that unauthorized access leads to configuration tampering, loss of monitoring, or disruption of electric service.
