Biennial plan

A subscription billed every two years, often at a lower effective price.

A biennial plan is a subscription billed once every two years, usually at a lower effective monthly cost than a shorter billing cycle. Vendors use this pricing model for software such as password managers, security platforms, and cloud services because it encourages longer commitments and lowers churn.

In cyber security, the billing term matters because pricing can affect adoption of defensive tools. A lower long-term cost may help organizations standardize secure practices, but it can also lock them into a product before they fully evaluate deployment, permissions, and admin controls. Attackers do not target the billing cycle itself, but they benefit when organizations delay purchasing or roll out security tools inconsistently. Defenders should treat a biennial plan as a procurement choice, not a security control: the real protection comes from configuration, onboarding, access reviews, and offboarding processes that keep credentials and accounts under control.
