Bill of lading

Shipping document that records cargo details and transfer of goods.

A bill of lading is a shipping document that records what cargo is being moved, who is sending it, who receives it, and the transfer of custody during transport. In logistics systems, it can exist as a paper form or as a digital record inside EDI and port-management platforms.

In cyber security, bills of lading matter because they combine operational, commercial, and identity data in one place. Attackers may steal or threaten to publish them to pressure victims, support fraud, or map supply chains. Defenders treat these records as sensitive business data: they restrict access, log retrievals, encrypt archives, and monitor for mass export or unusual document staging. Protecting bills of lading helps reduce extortion risk and limits downstream abuse of shipment information.
