Billing provenance

The traceable origin of who paid for a service and whether that payment was legitimate.

Billing provenance is the traceable origin of who paid for a service and whether that payment was legitimate. In cyber security, it helps answer a simple but important question: is this usage tied to a real, authorized customer, or to fraud, stolen credentials, or a resale scheme?

This matters because many online services are metered and easy to abuse. Attackers can use stolen cards, compromised accounts, or fake signups to buy capacity, then resell access at a discount or burn through quota anonymously. Defenders look at billing provenance alongside API key use, account history, and spending patterns to spot abuse. Weak provenance can signal chargeback risk, unauthorized access, data exposure through untrusted intermediaries, or a compromised supply chain for digital services. Strong provenance supports fraud detection, faster revocation, and better trust in who is actually consuming the service.
