Board committee

a subgroup of directors that reviews risk, audit, or compliance issues.

A board committee is a small group of company directors assigned to focus on specific oversight areas such as risk, audit, compliance, or security governance. Instead of the full board reviewing every detail, the committee examines reports, questions management, and tracks whether controls are working as intended.

In cybersecurity, board committees matter because they help turn security from a technical function into an accountable governance process. They may review audit findings, incident metrics, access-control exceptions, or major technology changes such as AI deployments. In a well-run defense program, the committee can demand evidence, approve remediation plans, and escalate weak controls. In a weak program, it may exist only on paper, allowing risky changes, poor logging, or unresolved vulnerabilities to persist without real challenge.
