Branching

A point where a pattern or process can follow one of several paths.

Branching is a point in a pattern or process where execution can take one of several paths. In a regular expression, alternatives such as cat|dog create a branch: the pattern can match either “cat” or “dog.” Visualizing branches can make it easier to see how a pattern’s different choices relate to its input.

Branching matters in cyber security because complex rules can behave differently across possible inputs. A mistaken alternative in a regular expression used for validation, filtering, or log parsing may accept data that should be rejected or fail to recognize relevant text. Test each path with realistic inputs and edge cases, and review the complete pattern; visual aids can help reveal its structure but do not replace testing.
