Break-even point

The transaction level at which a plan’s savings balance out its monthly cost.

The break-even point is the transaction level where a plan’s savings exactly offset its fixed monthly cost. In payment services, that means calculating how many card sales are needed before a lower commission rate becomes cheaper than a simpler pay-as-you-go model. It is a basic pricing metric, but it has technical value because the real cost of a service depends on volume, fee tiers, and which transactions qualify for the lower rate.

In cyber security and fraud operations, break-even analysis helps teams choose controls with recurring costs, such as fraud scoring, bot filtering, chargeback management, or managed detection services. A tool may look expensive at low volume, yet pay for itself once it reduces losses or labor enough. Attackers and abuse can also move the break-even point by increasing failed payments, chargebacks, or manual review work. Defenders use the calculation to decide when a control is worth deploying and to avoid relying on headline rates alone.
