A break-in attempt is an effort to gain unauthorized access to a system, account, or application. It may involve guessing or reusing passwords, exploiting a software weakness, or probing a website for exposed entry points. An attempt does not necessarily mean access succeeded or that data was viewed or taken.
In cyber security, repeated attempts can signal scanning, credential abuse, or an effort to exploit vulnerable services. Attackers may automate these actions to try them across many targets or at high speed. Defenders can monitor authentication failures and unusual request patterns, rate-limit repeated activity, use multi-factor authentication, patch exposed systems, and alert on suspicious behavior. Reviewing logs helps distinguish unsuccessful attempts from confirmed access.
