A breakout board is a small circuit board that exposes the pins of a chip, sensor, or connector on easy-to-use headers or pads. It makes a component simpler to wire, power, probe, and test without soldering directly to fine-pitch pins or custom circuitry.
In cyber security, breakout boards are common in hardware labs, reverse engineering, and IoT prototyping because they let analysts quickly attach logic analyzers, serial adapters, or power monitors. The same convenience can help attackers: a breakout board can make it easier to access debug interfaces, sniff data lines, or manipulate sensor signals during hardware tampering. For defenders, these boards are useful for validation, incident response, and product testing, but they also remind teams to remove or protect debug access before shipping a device.
