Bring-your-own-tools is a service model in which a managed security provider works with the customer’s existing security stack instead of replacing it. In an MDR setup, that can mean using the organization’s own EDR, SIEM, cloud logs, and response workflows while the provider supplies monitoring, detection, and analyst support.
This matters because security teams often already have tools, policies, and integrations in place. A bring-your-own-tools model can protect prior investments and reduce migration work, but it also depends on the provider’s ability to operate across that environment and on the customer’s permissions. In real defenses, it is useful when responders need fast access to existing telemetry and containment controls. In real attacks, the weakness is usually not the model itself but poor integration, incomplete visibility, or limited authority to act when an alert needs immediate response.
