Budget creep

The tendency for a project’s total cost to rise after parts and integration are added.

Budget creep is the tendency for a project’s total cost to rise after the initial parts list is assembled and integration begins. A build may look affordable on paper, but the final price grows as hidden needs appear: enclosures, power, cables, storage, testing, and the labor to make everything work together. In cyber security, this matters because security tools, labs, and custom hardware often cost more than their base components once they are made operational.

In real defensive work, budget creep can affect sensor deployments, monitoring stations, and portable analysis kits, where support equipment and maintenance quickly exceed the headline device cost. Attackers also face it when building infrastructure, since proxies, hosting, automation, and operational redundancy add up beyond the first estimate. The practical lesson is to budget for integration, reliability, and upkeep, not just for the core device or software.
