A business continuity management system (BCMS) is the organized set of policies, processes, roles, and controls used to keep essential operations running during disruption. It identifies critical functions, the dependencies they rely on, acceptable recovery times, and the fallback options needed to restore service. Standards such as ISO 22301 are often used to structure a BCMS and make it testable rather than purely documented.
In cyber security, a BCMS matters because attacks often aim to interrupt operations, not just steal data. Ransomware, destructive malware, denial-of-service attacks, and supplier compromise can all prevent access to systems, people, or facilities. A strong BCMS helps defenders map single points of failure, maintain alternate workarounds, and verify recovery through exercises and metrics. It turns continuity into a measurable capability: can critical services keep running, and can they be restored within the required time under real stress?
