Business Criticality

The degree to which a system matters to revenue, operations, compliance, or other core outcomes.

Business criticality is the degree to which a system affects revenue, operations, compliance, safety, or other core outcomes. A highly critical service may power payments, authentication, customer access, or regulated workflows, while a lower-criticality system may only support internal convenience. The key point is that technical importance and business importance are not the same thing.

In cyber security, business criticality helps teams decide where to place stronger monitoring, stricter access controls, faster recovery plans, and higher resilience spending. Attackers often target critical paths because disruption there creates maximum pressure, such as blocking login, slowing checkout, or interrupting reporting. Defenders use business criticality to prioritize incident response: a minor alert on a low-value system may wait, but the same issue on a revenue or compliance system demands immediate action. It is also used in risk assessments and recovery planning so protection matches the real cost of failure.
