Business outcome metrics

Measurements tied to real operational or financial results, not just usage counts.

Business outcome metrics are measurements tied to real operational or financial results, such as reduced fraud losses, faster incident response, fewer service disruptions, or lower compliance costs. They are more meaningful than vanity metrics like page views, logins, or feature clicks because they show whether a system actually improved the business.

In cyber security, outcome metrics help defenders judge whether a control works in practice. For example, an AI assistant may be popular, but security teams should ask whether it reduces ticket resolution time, prevents data leakage, or improves analyst throughput without increasing risk. Attackers also benefit when defenders rely only on usage counts, because a tool can look busy while adding little protection. Strong programs define success in advance, measure against a control group when possible, and stop projects that do not improve the target outcome.
