Business process reengineering

The fundamental redesign of a process to improve performance rather than just speed up old steps.

Business process reengineering (BPR) is the fundamental redesign of a workflow to improve performance, not just automate or speed up the existing steps. Instead of preserving a slow approval chain or manual handoff, BPR asks which tasks are still necessary, which can be standardized, and which controls need to stay.

In cyber security, BPR matters because outdated processes often create risk: duplicate approvals, ad hoc exceptions, weak segregation of duties, and inconsistent access requests can all become attack paths. Defenders use process mining and baselining to map real work before changing it, then redesign the process to reduce error, limit privilege, and make automation governable. Attackers also benefit when organizations modernize old workflows without reengineering them first, because the same complexity and blind spots remain at higher speed.
