Catalog consolidation

The merging of publishing portfolios into fewer owners, which can increase market leverage.

Catalog consolidation is the merging of multiple publishing portfolios into fewer owners. In practice, a smaller number of companies control more journals, books, licenses, and pricing terms. This matters in cyber security because consolidation creates concentration risk: one identity system, billing platform, metadata service, or content delivery stack may now support many titles and customers at once.

That larger blast radius makes the environment more attractive to attackers and more sensitive to operational failure. A compromise of access controls, entitlement systems, or partner integrations can affect many downstream institutions at the same time. Defenders respond with vendor risk reviews, strong authentication, segmented administration, audit logging, and clear provenance and rights controls for reused content. In security planning, catalog consolidation is therefore less about ownership alone and more about how centralized platforms change exposure, resilience, and trust.
